Hair Loss Causes
It is estimated that by age 35, two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of hair loss. It is also estimated that by age 50, about eighty five percent of men have significantly thinning hair. It goes without saying that a majority of these men are dissatisfied with the way they look after this hair loss. The real question is what causes this aggravating baldness.
There are many known causes of men's hair loss. A major reason for hair loss is heredity. As most balding men can tell you, it does run in the family. There are other less common reasons for hair loss, such as medication side effects, or certain diseases. With the most common being genes, we will focus on this aspect of the hair loss causes.
The actual scientific facts behind inherited balding is a little complicated. Men with this problem are genetically sensitive to a chemical called DHT. This chemical causes each follicle to shrink and eventually shorten the hair follicle’s lifespan.
DHT or dihydrtestosterone come from male testosterone and is held in the hair follicle’s oil gland. Scientists are still not 100 percent sure of everything involved with this process. The one thing they are sure of is if you stop or decrease the DHT process, hair will continue to grow. With some sort of intervention, hair loss may be stopped or at least slowed down.
With a proper family history, medical history, and the pattern at which the hair is thinning, a doctor or specialist can diagnose the level at which the DHT process is causing hair loss. These diagnoses can greatly affect the course of action taken to remedy the hair loss.
Doctors actually use a scale to measure the level of baldness. This scale is based on the variation and pattern of hair loss. This scale is called The Norwood Scale. There are many types of treatments for hair loss. A majority of these treatments will most likely bring about little or no results. This can be upsetting, because some of these treatments are expensive and at the same time useless.
There are two major treatments that have been clinically proven to work on different levels of male hair loss. The most popular treatment is a one milligram dose of Procerin. The generic name for this medication is called Finasteride. Procerin for hair loss was actually an accidental discovery.
This product was developed be a company called Merck for treatment of enlarged prostate glands. While taking this medication, Men noticed significant hair growth as a welcomed side effect. In 1997 this medication became the first pill to treat male baldness. The second medication used was Minoxidil. This medication was originally used for high blood pressure.
Taking this pill caused hair to grow in unexpected places, such as their foreheads or the palm of their hands. This discovery led to the topical version of this medication. Minoxidil had marginal results in hair growth. This is now considered the second choice behind Procerin. Many men use both products, with Minoxidel being a supplement to Procerin.
While the battle against hair loss is long from over, there have been many great strides in the research involved with this. With the right treatment and a good diagnoses you may never get your old hair back but new hair could soon take its' rightful place.
